Passing laws that discriminate against a certain group of people unconsciously givesk permission to loo upon, and therefore treat, that certain group of people as inferior, less deserving of humanity.
People say banning same-sex marriage is only to protect the sanctity of marriage, (or lack-thereof), but what it does -intentionally or unintentionally- is makes gay people appear as if they are less human, because they are less deserving of equality. It encourages communal and self shaming, bullying, ostracizing, rejection, physical/verbal/emotional abuse, anger, depression, self-loathing, and suicide.
Any Church group that tells gays their feelings are unnatural, changeable, suppressible, is a vehicle of the above. Encouraging gays to go into conversion therapy, or to marry someone of the opposite-sex because it’s what’s “right” perpetuates this culture.
Governments that allow laws to be passed, that directly conflict with American values and ideology, that oppress and degrade a group base on one commonality also support the above.
This is why marriage equality, other laws, and education are so important.
